Happy Birthday Django – Live from Denmark

We had a great time celebrating Django Reinhardt’s 100th birthday in Denmark Saturday night. Lot’s of great musicians, cool people, and amazing hospitality.

What was really cool was having 297 friends from all over the world tune in to watch the show live on the internet. It’s been a while since we’ve done something like this and we weren’t sure how it would go, but things turned out perfectly. We loved reading the online chat that was going on during the show. You guys were having your own private party there. Some funny stuff.

So did you dig the show? If you were there online, leave a comment and let me know what the experience was like watching from home. Should we do this again sometime? For those who couldn’t catch the show live, we’re putting it up here now. Enjoy!

Hey Robin, this was a real treat to watch and truly fantastic and exciting guitar playing. You Tube is overflowing with incredibly technically accomplished guitarists playing at a gazillion miles an hour but i bet they would be blown away to see your gig containing melody, swing, speed, harmony, and humour. It really was a joy to watch.

Great show, Rob! Thanks so much for posting the video, as we weren’t able to attend the live feed. It’s so nice to see you and Kev playing together again. Can’t wait to see you both in person sometime soon! And yes, please do more events like this whenever you’re able.

Robie, what a grand show. This was beautiful. You turned that drab sinatra tune into gold.,..sparkling and glowing.

Hi Robin,

So glad you did the Podcast. We were fortunate enough to have a gig where we celebrated Django’s 100th. Loved your selection. You always come up with some wild tunes like Something Stupid and Tainted Love! I would recognize your playing anywhere…and it sounded great!

Best,

Another viewer from the Antipodes here. Did’nt catch the live experience (it was already over when I saw the email) but really enjoyed the concert after the event–eclectic mix of well-known favourites in the genre with surprises–just what was needed for a birthday party! Fabulous playing all round. And thanks for keeping it fresh with your always interesting and tasteful take on the GJ tunes and your willingness to tackle other tunes, including pop tunes. And I Love Her, Something Stupid and Tainted Love, in particular, were a treat. It was great to be able to see Kevin’s terrific rhythm playing. I will try to catch the next event. Cheers, Rich

Thanks for the great podcast. I just missed the lve show, but this was great to catch up.

It’s good to hear you pushing things to the next level with your arranging and solo work. Not just the traditional renditions.

Keep up the good work!

Robin,

Each time I think you’ve reached a new level, you simply raise the bar even higher. Your playing was terrific. Kev is still the rhythm king even with hair. We couldn’t catch the live feed, but this podcast is great. Excellent sound –your sound– and we loved the bird’s-eye view. The last guy I know who could ferret out little musical gems that no one else thought could make jazz heads as well as you do was Miles.

Keep swinging, love to the family,
Jeff (for D & J & S)

Hi Robin,
Wonderful! Your old pal —Chris Sartisohn— turned me onto you, your music and your books. I have to tell you this is the best web connection I have had and was delighted to hear your hot chops ‘up close’! Congrats on all your numbers and especially on your new arrangements… one of the very best things about gypsy jazz is hearing everything ‘new again’! I continue to hone my licks and am inspired all over again by your great work. Thank you. And thank you for being so accessible (recent web guitar lessons, pod casts…).
All the very best…

Dear Robin,

Inspirational and it is greatly appreciated the amount of time you have put into this website. Down here in the South of Spain we don’t get to see much gypsy Jazz so this was a treat. Flamenco players here talk about duende when a musician and audience are totally immersed in the music..this concert was a great example.

Hello Robin,

That was a very fun idea, and celebrating Django’s birthday is a great way to bring this music more attention. We organized a special party here on Bainbridge Island; and we had a respectable 80 people attend, even though it was a bit of a last minute thing. National Public Radio here in the US did a five minute story on D’s birthday, that might have helped raise attendance, too. We are definitely planning on doing it again next year — and we think we all should adopt this as an annual event. Cheers! Mike Sciacca (Rangers’ dad)

Hi Robin .
I tried to watch live from here in England (slowest broadband in Europe?) and could only catch a few seconds at a time. Been trying afternoons and can watch around four minutes before the transmission crashes. However the concert is a great idea and I thought your sound and the tone you got from you highly skilled technique was excellent. I loved the introduction of new material to push the genre forward (Every Breath you Take) and look forward to getting passed Bossa Dorada successfully in the near future.
Very best wishes

Thanks for posting this gig on the blog. On the big night itself my ageing computer crashed halfway through the second number never to recover. I guess the emotion of Django’s century was all too much for it. Fantastic to be able to see it now, really liked the set with its eclectic variety mixed with some classic Django.

Many thanks
Russell
